We crease a castle out of homework pages,
its pencil lines fading, then darkening again—
while unsolved math problems still sprawl on scrap paper,
their crooked numbers like unfinished verses.
We always cut childhood into uneven shapes:
the silhouette of jump ropes, marbles’ trapped rainbows,
all tucked between the lines of draft paper.
Years later, when we shake them loose,
those afternoons—crumpled, then smoothed—
Still rustle softly in the back of drawers.
